The song of Gratitude by Bharatiyar performed by Suhasini Koulag / Kannan Yen Sevaghan

"Kannan yen Sevagan" a Tamil poem by Subramanya Bharathiyar. The story goes like this. One day there is a knock on the poet's door. The poet who was finding it difficult to manage the daily chores of the house finds a boy when he opens the door. The boy introduces himself as Kannan and says he has come a long way just to serve him. The poet asks him what all he could do. The Kannan gives a long list of work that he could do. The list includes washing clothes, taking care of children, feeding animals, keeping the house clean, and so on. He also tells that he will not talk much, but he will work day and night for him. The poet asks how much he needs to pay in return for the work he does. Kannan says "I value love more than money". The poet takes him for the work. As time goes by, not only the house gets cleaned up, but the thought process of the poet got changed. Now he is more meditative, more peaceful, and wealthier. As the days passed the poet started wondering, his desire to know more about the boy got augmented. The boy sometimes behaves like a friend, an advisor, a teacher and he is everywhere and does what is in his mind. The poet starts thinking. Is this the same boy I am worshipping all these years as Kanna? Has that Kannan who is in Vaikunta has walked down to my house as Domestic help ? or can we have the grace to look upon every single person who helps us and see Kanna in them?
